                                    3D Graffiti

Linus is known for his fantastical furniture, visionary abstract representational sculpture, painting, imaginative outstillations, and woodcut prints.

The Art of Linus Coraggio – 3D Graffiti is a film is about a genre Coraggio pioneered in 1982 called 3D Graffiti – small metal sculptures, some with mixed media and text, attached clandestinely to no-parking sign posts in New York City and in other cities around the United States.

The Art of Linus Coraggio – Studios Bushwick and Ellenville

“It’s hard to find the right kind of studio for a metal sculptor. If not near impossible – in Manhattan these days.

I wouldn’t be out in Bushwick… One of the landlords who owns it happened to be a metal sculptor at one point back in the day…

He sort of tolerates me in a surly way out there…”

…Excerpt from the film.

This film started with a trip I took with Linus to his then studio in Bushwick, New York in the fall of 2009.  Six years later, after the closing of that studio it made sense to travel north to Ellenville, New York to document how he was making art in the outdoor space on a cold winter day. An artist needs his/her studio and this film is about that reality….

                               – In the East Village

We shot most of this film in the summer of 2015 and I finished it, like two of the others, during the Quarantine of 2020.

Traveling through the East Village with Linus and his friend Kelly was like a trip through time, and is just a small glimpse into the expansive art that Coraggio still continues to make.

The next time you go for a stroll in the East Village keep your eyes open, you won’t have to look very far to see something that Linus has created.
